Amy Kustra (b. 1972, Grosse Pointe, MI)
Amy grew up in both Michigan and New Rochelle, New York, and after going to school in San Francisco, she felt called back east – to Maine, where she currently resides.
From an early age Amy took up drawing and traveled as a teen throughout Europe and Asia to study art. Travel continues to be a big part of her life - bringing her to many parts of the world, where the relationships, culture, colors, art, and history are a constant inspiration for her work.
Amy received her undergraduate degrees in environmental studies and anthropology and after a chance meeting with Mother Theresa she felt called to medicine and became a family doctor. Her focus was integrative wellness, teaching in the local residency programs and caring for the underserved.
In 2015 the beckoning of a more creative, expressive life was undeniable. At which point she turned to painting full time.
Amy has studied with numerous Maine painters and has taken courses at MECA and the New York Academy of Art. More recently she has been studying abstract expressionism with Jane Burton in Santa Fe. Amy maintains a studio at Running with Scissors in Portland, Maine and is constantly inspired by the people, light, coast, and beauty of this part of the world.
